The Stanford hospitals and clinics are facing a class action lawsuit that claims Stanford released 20,000 confidential patient records on a commercial website for a year. The lawsuit claims that this is in violation of state law under the Confidentiality of Medical Information Act. Stanford puts the blame for this privacy breach on Multi-Specialty Collection Services who were hired by Stanford as a subcontractor. The case is entitled Shana Springer v. Stanford Hospitals & Clinics and Multi-Specialty Collection Services and is under the jurisdiction of the Superior Court of the State of California, County of Los Angeles, Central District. Private information that was released includes medical record numbers, hospital account numbers, billing charges, and emergency room admission and discharge dates.
